Air Conditioning

How to Choose the Right Type of Heating System

Choosing the right heating and air conditioning system for your house can be a daunting task. Don’t worry, because in this short guide, we’ll discuss the most common heating systems and hopefully, find one that best suits you and your home’s needs.

Boilers (Hydronic Systems)

Heating and air conditioning go hand in hand in temperate climates and if you have a boiler, you have what is known as a hydronic system. This system makes use of heated water or steam to increase the temperature of a building. Heat is distributed through radiators, heating baseboards, or in some modern homes, through floor and ceiling copper tubing. The heat is pumped by a steam boiler or a heat pump.

Furnaces (Forced Air Systems)

Furnaces are possibly the most common type of heating and air conditioning in most American homes. Unlike boilers that use heated water, furnaces make use of heated air. The air is circulated pretty much identically as those of hydronic systems with a few notable differences in the cycle. Many people believe furnaces or boilers are interchangeable, however, their methods of producing heat and distributing it are very different. You don’t want to tell your repair technician to service a boiler when you actually have a furnace installed.

Hybrid Systems

In some cases, a combination of heated air and water accomplish the heating needs of a household. As a stand-alone system, hybrid systems can often underperform compared to furnaces or boilers.
